Abstract

Abstract A nano Pt/MgO catalyst was prepared by the wet impregnation method. Decomposition of methane and CO2 reforming of methane (CRM) were investigated by using temperature programmed reaction (TPRa), D2–CH4 isotopic exchange reaction, pulse reaction and temperature programmed surface reaction (TPSR). The results show that the nano Pt/MgO catalyst with Pt loading 1.05 wt% has high activity for CH4 decomposition and the CRM reaction. The results of D2–CH4 exchange experiments showed that the Pt/MgO catalyst was very effective for the activation of methane, which is one reason why the catalyst has high activity for CRM. The results of the pulse reaction give a similar idea and the treatment of the catalyst influences the activity for CH4 activation.
