Abstract

In this study, the effect of nanofluids has been deliberated on mass transfer properties for liquid-liquid extraction using drops. The effect of four nanofluids Al2O3, ZnO, SiO2 and TiO2 have been carried out on the extraction of acetic acid from dispersed phase of toluene containing nanoparticles to continuous phase of distilled water. Mass transfer coefficient was observed to enhance significantly in case of nanofluids compared to pure system. Maximum enhancement in mass transfer coefficient was observed to be 119.5% for SiO2 nanofluid. The enhancement has been attributed to Brownian motion and Marangoni effect. A new method of correlating the experimental data has been proposed by combining hydrodynamics and mass transfer properties as function of terminal velocity, time scale analysis and nanoparticle volume fraction. The correlation can be applied to all nanofluid and pure systems for single drop extraction.
