Abstract

Local magnetization is the basis of magnetic flux leakage testing for tank floors. A 3D finite element method has been used to study the influence of the width of steel plate on local magnetization of the plate. Results show that the local region can be magnetized to saturation even if the width of steel plate is infinite. The influences on the local magnetization of the steel plate by permanent magnet thickness, magnet pole area and the air gap between the magnetic poles and the surface of the steel plate have also been studied. Optimized parameters of the magnetizer have been obtained and a testing instrument for tank floor inspection has been designed.
