Abstract

Internal grinding of small bore requires high-speed rotation of grinding spindle and also bearing stiffness and rotational accuracy to achieve very high grinding accuracy. As an attempt to apply air static bearings to internal grinding spindle, spindle performance and grinding accuracy of air static bearing which has high-speed rotation and high rotational accuracy but low bearing stiffness is examined and compared with the ball bearing spindle. As for the bearing stiffness, the difference becomes smaller as the rotational speed increases and L/d of wheel quill becomes larger. The non-repeatable run out of air bearing is approximately one fourth that of ball bearings, and is not influenced by the rotational speed. The grinding accuracy is remarkably influenced by elastic deformation of the wheel quill, however, scarcely affected by rotational accuracy of the bearing.KeywordsInternal grindingAir static bearingBall bearingCBN wheel
