Abstract
Surge tanks are common measures for preventing water hammer damage in long-distance water supply project, and its height selection is very important and complex. The working principle of surge tank and running rules of pumps and pressure regulating valves was introduced. Based on a real engineering example, the water level in the tank was calculated and analyzed. According to the results, the tank height was selected and the operating mode in different water level and discharge combinations were given. Two principles for the elevation selection of surge tank were summarized: first, in high water level and small flow condition, the pump is closed and the regulating valve is working, the tank height should meet gravity flow requirement; second, in low water level and large flow condition, the pump is working and the regulating valve is not working, the tank height should meet pressurized water supply requirement. The conclusion provides reference for similar water supply projects.
