Abstract

Three-dimensional (3D) Laser Scanner Technology (3D LST) is a technology of spatial information extraction and it can instantaneously measured 3D coordinate values for space by using the principle of laser range and angle measurement, then it can be used for extracting the non-contact space information of the object surface. Here this method is applied in the fast and accurate measurement of the vertical metal tank capacity. This paper is proposed a measurement method of Large-scale Vertical Tank Volume Metrology based on the 3D Laser Scanner (3D LS) Method, and calculated volume value corresponding with the height of different level by making use of the Triangle Area Integration (TAI) method and Cross-sectional Area Height Integration (CAHI) method, and designed a test system. Selecting a 6000 m3 tank as the object of study, the internal measured results are showed that the 3D LS method has good repeatability and reproducibility and is verified the effectiveness by using the geometric measurements of capacity as a reference, significantly improving the efficiency of metrology test. The external measured results are performed that the proposed method has unique advantages in accurate measurement of the irregular tank capacity and tank deformation monitoring by selecting a 5000 m3 tank as the study object.
