Abstract
Propulsive performance of harmonically heaving and pitching foil is degraded by a breakdown in the angle of attack profile. In this paper, we build up a two-degree freedom harmonic motion in both heave and pitch motion as the baseline, and compare directly the performance obtained with specific angle of attack profiles and three-degree freedom harmonic motion. We set these profiles are: a square, a sawtooth wave and a cosine function. About three-degree freedom, we add a thrash motion on the base of two-degree freedom harmonic motion. The sawtooth angle of attack achieves the highest thrust coefficients over the other two cases of two-degree freedom motion. The three-degree freedom harmonic motion achieves a significant improve of thrust coefficients over other cases, but the efficiency is lower than the specific angle of attack profiles.
