Abstract

This report concerns a result obtained by using a high speed rail testing machine, which is descrived in the first report. Especially, the running surface layer of actual rail is investigated in detail. Then, the possibility of surface crack propagation was analyzed by fracture mechanics. The main results obtained are as follows : (1) Defect in running surface ; Cracks are initiated at the surface, being remarkably propagated in the wheel running direction and a little in the opposite direction. In this test, however, the white phase is observed in the surface layer and cracks run through the white phase. (2) Head checks at the gate corner ; Many cracks are observed at the gage corner with the similar pitch and angle to wheel direction. (3) The above tendency is very similar to those in Shinkansen. (4) The possibility of crack propagation could be calculated by fracture mechanics, and would be very small for the shorter cracks such as 0.5 mm in length due to the friction of cracked surfaces.
