Abstract

Bacteria can accelerate the carbonation process occurring in freshly cast specimens; thereby, improve the mechanical and durability properties of steel slag products. β-C2S is one of the main mineral phases in steel slag. For simplification, the β-C2S was utilized to study the mechanisms of hydration process of steel slag. This paper focused on the influence of bacteria on formation of hydration products and development of compressive strength of steel slag products. The microstructure of the carbonized β-C2S specimens was also studied. By analyzing the results of compressive strength, QXRD, SEM-EDS, X-CT, BET and MIP tests, it could be found that the addition of bacteria has increased the degree of carbonation by 16.1% and the compressive strength by 30.1%. It did not change the form of calcium carbonate crystal but had great effects on the morphology and the size of the crystals, which might account for the improved carbonation and hydration degree of steel slag products. The pore structure of β-C2S specimens was refined with the incorporation of bacteria.
