Abstract

Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) have been widely used in industry because of their attractive mechanical characteristics. In this report investigates the abrasive wear in CFRP, in a vibrating environment, using several coated abrasive papers. The wear process was studied in the optical micrographs of the abrasive paper and by applying the following equation. The equation proposed for the wear volume W is as follows : W=A{1-exp(-B·s)}+C·s, where s : number of traversals, A : wear volume at end of initial wear process, B : arrival rate of stationary wear process and C : specific wear rate during stationary wear process. Results obtained are as follows ; (1) The wear curve was derived, and the factors were determined quantitatively. (2) The wear volume in the initial wear process was determined. (3) The arrival rate of stationary wear process remained constant, independently of the vibrational directions and frictional directions.
