Abstract

In internal finishing using magnetic abrasive machining, the finishing pressure is dependent on the diameter and the susceptibility of the magnetic abrasives and the magnetic field distribution at the finishing zone. The effects of the magnetic field distribution on the finishing pressure of abrasives and the finishing characteristics were discussed in our 3rd report. This paper discusses the finishing mechanisms associated with the magnetic abrasives. It is clarified that the magnetic abrasive diameter influences the magnetic finishing pressure since the susceptibility of the magnetic abrasives and the resulting magnetic field strength are affected by the diameter of the magnetic abrasive. The finished surface roughness and material removal rate are affected by the finishing pressure, and are therefore also a function of the diameter of the magnetic abrasive. Here, a magnetic abrasive diameter of 80 μm is the most suitable for obtaining a smooth internal tube surface.
