Abstract

The most drinking water resource in Kobe depends on the Yodo river basin, so self-water source is very limited. The Kobe earthquake gave big damage on water supply system. They did not get even their own drinking water on that day, however there are many rivers which flow down from Rokko mountain in Kobe city. These rivers had enough water even after the Kobe earth quake. In this case study of Kobe city we estimated potential of river water as emergency water after a terrible earthquake. After 2 weeks of the earthquake, total water volume in 8 rivers amounts to 104000m3 per day. It equals to the drinking water for about 35, 000, 000 people and domestic water for 520, 000 people, therefore potential of river water in emergency is quite high. From water quality points of view we can drink most rivers water by simple treatment. We clear that river water has higher potential in emergency compared with water tanks and water supply system.
