Abstract

The underlying formation and reduction processes of nickel premonolayer oxide I in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) region were probed by in-phase fundamental harmonic and second harmonic of AC voltammetry in basic media. The premonolayer oxidation of nickel electrode in low potential range was also illustrated by XPS. It was found that hypophosphite oxidation took place in the potential range where nickel premonolayer oxide I presented. Based on the incipient hydrous oxide adatom mediator (IHOAM) model, it was implied that nickel premonolayer oxide I played the role of catalyst for hypophosphite oxidation.
