Abstract

The functional activity of DNA sequences from the 5′ region of the chicken α-globin gene domain was studied. Silencers and transcription terminators were found in a fragment located 11–14.5 kb upstream of the π gene. A fragment located 3–4.5 kb upstream of π was shown to contain a CpG cluster, a part of which proved to be selectively methylated in nonerythroid cells. Cloned upstream of the αD gene promoter, this fragment suppressed the promoter activity when all its CpG were methylated.
