Abstract

1. Benzamide is dehydrated by the dimethylformamide-thionyl chloride complex to benzonitrile at a reaction temperature of 40°. 2. It was shown that a new direction exists for the reaction of benzamide with the dimethylformamide-thionyl chloride complex at 80°, which leads to the formation of benzoyl chloride. 3. Certain assumptions were expressed regarding the course of the reaction for the formation of benzoyl chloride from benzamide via the benzonitrile step.
