Abstract

The study of the compressibility of municipal solid waste (MSW) is an essential factor that contributes for the prediction of consolidation in sanitary landfills. This study researched the primary compression of the fresh MSW, in the laboratory, applying recognised methodologies of soil mechanics. Compression tests were performed on bench scale, using samples with 50.14% (wet weight basis). The average density was 0.68 g.cm3, with a gravimetric composition of 45.5% of organic matter. It was found an average primary compression index (Cc) of 1.06 ± 0.41. The samples also showed a high initial void ratio, with an average of 7.14 ± 0.41. The applied methodology was of easy applicability and comprised some limitations regarding the adaptation of equipment, calculations, and different characteristics of the samples used. It was noted the importance of conducting studies of compressibility with fresh MSW, because this condition influences directly on obtaining the primary compression index.
