Abstract

Poly (butylene terephthalate) (PBT)/SiO2 nanocomposites, with epoxy resin as a compatibilizer, were prepared by melt blending in a twin-screw extruder. The phase morphology, crystallization behavior, and mechanical properties of the hybrid nanocomposites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and mechanical tests. The addition of epoxy resin improves the dispersion of SiO2 particles with size of about 70–100 nm and the interfacial interaction between SiO2 and PBT matrix is enhanced due to the reaction between the epoxy groups of the epoxy resin and the hydroxyl groups of the SiO2 surfaces and PBT chains. As a result, the tensile strength, modulus, and flexural strength of the nanocomposites were improved by the presence of 1 wt% epoxy with unchanged notched impact strength.
