Abstract
The Mössbauer spectra of europium orthophosphate crystals were measured. The isomer shift (IS), the component V zz of the electric field gradient, the electric quadrupole splitting component eQV zz and the asymmetry parameter η were determined. The contributions of the crystal field and the valence electrons to the electric field gradient were calculated. The results show that there may be some electron populations in the 5d valence orbitals of the europium atom and that the chemical bond between the europium atom and the nearest oxygen atoms may possess a certain covalent character.
