Abstract
The ultraviolet absorption spectrum in the region 340–190 nm in the vapour state as well as in solutions and the fluorescence and phosphorescence spectra in ethanol solution at 77 K have been reported for 2-chloro-6-methoxypyridine. Two systems of absorption bands corresponding to π→ π* transitions II and III are identified and their oscillator strengths have been calculated. The dipole moments in the excited states associated with these transitions have been determined. The laser Raman spectrum of the molecule in the liquid state and the infrared absorption spectrum in the region 4000–200 cm −1 in the liquid and solution phases are also measured, and a vibrational assignment of the observed frequencies is given. A correlation of the excited state fundamental frequencies observed in the UV absorption spectrum with the Raman or infrared frequencies is obtained.
