Abstract

Attempts have been made to study the effect of uremic metabolites upon erythrocyte glycolysis. In blood from uremic persons, the rate of disappearance of glucose is normal. However, the ultrafiltrate of uremic blood produces inhibition of glucose utilization by normal erythrocytes. The failure to observe this in uremic blood may be due to the younger erythrocyte population. The mechanism and possible significance of this inhibition remain to be shown.
