Abstract

The Chiado fire that occured in the historical centre of Lisbon destroyed several buildings built between the XIII and the XX centuries, representing a significant loss for the city patrimony. The importance of the fire led to the development of special studies to understand the reasons for the size of the fire and to draw conclusions for the rehabilitation of the damaged buildings. The conclusions of these studies are presented in this paper and include the results of a numerical fire model, the analysis of several test results with material gathered in situ, and the study of a fire risk analysis performed for a typical Chiado zone.
