Abstract

1. The contact potentials of a number of metals in hydrocarbon electrolytes were measured with a high-sensitivity electrometric instrument. 2. The relative detergency of a number of additive motor oils was determined and the corrosiveness of oils and additive oils in relation to copper studied on the basis of changes in the galvanic emf in hydrocarbon electrolytes and from the electrifying potential of hydrocarbon fluids. 3. The method developed here can be used for quality control in the synthesis and production of additives.
