Abstract

Four resonances in the reactions 16O(α, γ)20Ne and 4He(16O, γ)20Ne have been studied using gas targets of oxygen and helium. Resonances at 5.374, 6.930, and 7.940 MeV alpha-particle bombarding energy had been observed previously using the first reaction. In this experiment, an additional resonance was found at 5.075-MeV alpha-particle bombarding energy. This resonance level decays by a prominent cascade of gamma rays through the 4+, 4.25-MeV level in 20Ne and can be identified with a 6+, 8.79-MeV level in 20Ne observed previously in the 12C(12C, α)20Ne reaction. A comparison of the yield of the new resonance with one previously reported gives a value of ωγ = 1.8 ± 0.4 eV, which implies an E2 strength of 28 ± 6 Weisskopf units for the 6+ to 4+ transition.
