Abstract

The 38Ar(p, γ) 39K reaction has been investigated in the proton energy region E p = 0.7–2.4 MeV. 55 new resonances have been observed and many multiplets have been resolved. The energies and strengths of 99 resonances are reported. Further, branching ratios have been deduced for 34 resonances. Possible fragments of the analogue state of the first excited state and candidates for the analogue states of the second and third excited states in 39Ar are discussed. Thermonuclear reaction rates for the 38Ar(p, γ) 39K reaction have been calculated from the present resonance strengths in the stellar temperature region T = (0.5–8.0) × 10 9 K. An appropriate analytic expression for the experimental rates is presented, and a comparison is made with statistical nuclear-model calculations.
