Abstract

Two superconducting magnet models, warm-iron and cold-iron designs, are studied. The authors describe a method for measuring quench propagation velocity in superconducting cables with a transport current in an external field under cooling conditions typical for those of the magnet winding. Results on measuring quench propagation velocities in warm-iron and cold-iron designs are presented, and the results obtained for short samples and model coils are compared. They make it possible to simulate numerically a quench process in the coil. >
