Abstract

In order to determine the degree of erosion of carbon fibres by molten silicon, liquid phase impregnation of various types of fibres was carried out. The dependence of the thickness of the silicon carbide coat on the fibre surface on the fibre pretreatment temperature has been studied. It is shown that the maximum degree of surface erosion is typical for carbonized fibres. Fibres treated at temperatures above 2000°C suffer negligible erosion, which diminishes in the temperature sequence 2000-2400-2800°C.
