Abstract

We have investigated the transitions ϒ(3S)→π+π−ϒ(1S), ϒ(3S)→π+π−ϒ(2S) and the cascade process ϒ(3S)→ϒ(2S)+X, ϒ(2S)→π+π−ϒ(1S), both in the exclusive decay mode, with the daughter ϒ state decaying into two leptons, and in the inclusive decay mode, with the daughter ϒ state decaying hadronically. Results are presented on the branching fractions and properties of the π+π− system. The π+π− invariant-mass spectra for the decays ϒ(3S)→π+π−ϒ(1S) and ϒ(3S)→π+π−ϒ(2S) are measured and compared with theoretical predictions. We also present the results of a search for the hb(1P11) and ϒ(1D3) states in inclusive ϒ(3S) decays, and for the exclusive decay ϒ(3S)→ηϒ(1S).Received 24 September 1990DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.43.1448©1991 American Physical Society
