Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus is rapidly increasing in both developed as well as developing nations. It is a growing health problem associated with increased risk of microvascular and macro vascular complications. At present, the prevalence of diabetes in Indian adults is 8.8%.It has been estimated that the prevalence of Diabetes mellitus will be around 4.4% worldwide in 2030. Diabetes mellitus is considered to be a prothrombotic state. Aims: To study MPV, PDW and P-LCR as a marker and their association with microvascular complications in type2 diabetes mellitus. Materials and Methods: The present study was a Prospective, Cross sectional, observational study. This Study was conducted from August 2019 to August 2021 at Department of general medicine, TATA Motors Hospital, Jamshedpur. 250 patients were included in this study. Result: The mean MPV (mean± s.d.) of patients was higher in Case Group [11.8880± 1.4381] compared to Control Group patients [9.7760± 1.0691] and this was statistically signicant (p<0.0001). It was found that the mean PDW (mean± s.d.) of patients was higher in Case Group [16.1600± 2.7632] compared to Control Group patients [13.1760± 1.4539] which was statistically signicant (p<0.0001). Our study showed that the mean P-LCR (mean± s.d.) of patients was higher in Case Group [46.2240± 7.0686] compared to Control Group patients [36.6960± 2.7510] and this was statistically signicant (p<0.0001). Conclusion: It was concluded that MPV, PDW, PCT, 24 urine Albumin and P-LCR were signicantly higher among type 2 DM patients with microvascular complications. This indicates that platelet indices can be used as prognostic markers of vascular complications and can be used as simple and cost-effective parameters to predict microvascular complications particularly in patients with old age.
