Abstract

We study the dynamics of magnetic monopoles in four-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory by Monte Carlo simulations in the Coulomb phase. We measure the monopole susceptibility by means of a constant external background field. The overall agreement between theoretical expectations and Monte Carlo data provides a further convincing evidence that the magnetic monopoles drive the deconfining phase transition in U(1) lattice gauge theory.
