Abstract
1. The successive oxidation of the methyl groups occurs during the microbiological transformation of 1,8-dimethylnaphthalene (DMN) by the culturePseudomonas fluorescens. 2. Employing the methods of UV, IR, and NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry the following microbiological oxidation products of DMN were identified: l-methyl-8-hydroxymethylnaphthalene, 1-methyl-8-naphthoic acid, 1,8-dihydroxymethylnaphthalene, 1,8-naphthalide, and the anhydride of 1,8-naphthalene-dicarboxylic acid.
