Abstract

The stiffness method of analysis is applied to general plane frames with straight members under the assumption that the length of the members does not change. The application requires the analysis of a class of mechanisms. Graph-theoretical concepts and results are found extremely useful in both the theoretical discussion and the actual determination of the displacement modes of the mechanism. A special method is developed for a subclass of mechanisms. Following the analysis of the mechanism, the equations of frame analysis can be formulated with no difficulty. An iterative method of solution is shown.
