Abstract
To the Editor : In your Journal of Diseases of Children (105:307 [March] 1963) Table 12 should hit thoughtful readers right squarely between the eyes. There is a very significant difference in the instances of malformation between Sweden, England, Wales, Japan, Mexico, and the United States. It would certainly be worthwhile if someone would appropriate a very sizeable grant of money to determine just what makes the difference. We know that in Japan, Mexico, and Sweden most deliveries are by midwife. The medical care in England and Wales is good minimal care but medication is at a minimum, as it is in Sweden. We in the United States are a very confirmed nation of pill gulpers. In the meantime, the high percentage of malformed babies in the United States in comparison with the other countries mentioned must be due to some extraneous and definitely preventable factor.
