Abstract

The Northern Water Problems Institute of the Karelian Research Centre RAS carries out comprehensive geographic studies of waterfalls in the Republic of Karelia. These activities were enabled by grant support from the Russian Geographical Society within the projects “Historical and geographical monuments of the European North of Russia” (2010), “Unknown waterfalls of Karelia” (2015) and “Unknown waterfalls of the European North of Russia” (2020). During the projects, more than 90 waterfalls in the territory of the republic were identified and cataloged, 46 of them were studied during expeditions to the Northern Ladoga area (2015) and the northern part of Karelia (2020). The research material was entered into the “Waterfalls of Karelia” database and formed the basis for the development of an information and reference system open to a wide range of users. The results of the work have been presented at numerous conferences and in teaching aids for the Tourism Department of the Petrozavodsk State University in the form of recommendations for the protection and recreational use of the waterfalls.
