Abstract

Fermilab E791 obtained a very large sample of charm meson decays (~ 250K), including a clean sample of 1172±61 D± and [Formula: see text] decays into three charged pions. A coherent amplitude analysis was used to fit the Dalitz plot distributions of these D± and [Formula: see text] decays and to measure the contributions from ρ0(770)π+, f0(980)π+, f2(1270)π+, f0(1370)π+, ρ0(1450)π+, and non-resonant π-π+π+ final states. The [Formula: see text] analysis provided accurate measurements of the masses and widths of the f0(980) and f0(1370). We also find strong evidence for a broad low-mass scalar resonance (mass 478 Mev/c2 and width 324 Mev/c2) which accounts for nearly half of the D± decays.
