Abstract

The geminate ion recombination of biphenyl solute ions in various non-polar liquids was observed by using picosecond pulse radiolysis. The geminate decay can be analyzed by the Smoluchowski equation considering the initial distribution of the ion pairs. The initial spatial distribution of the parent positive ions and the electrons is exponential type in low mobile liquids such as n-hexane, trans-decalin, cis-decalin, isoctane and methylcyclohexane. On the other hand, the initial spatial distribution is Gaussian type in high mobile liquids such as neopentane and tetramethylsilane.
