Mathematical aspects of transonic gas dynamics are studied. The harmonic acoustic oscillations in a potential flow of inviscid gas are considered. By studying boundary value problems for differential equations of mixed type, conclusions can be drawn regarding the linear stability or instability of the transonic flows.
