Abstract

Subject of the paper is to research electrolysis process by using sea water as electrolyte in order to reduce gas emission from coal combustion. The electrolysis device uses electrode to maintain electric current movement across electrolyte (sea water). Electric current creates chemical reaction that allows ion movement at electrolyte. Ion movement allows electric current able to move in electrolyte. Chemical ion reaction at electrolyte is used by author to reduce gas emissions from coal combustion. Gas emissions observed in this research experiment are sodium oxide (NO) and carbon oxide (CO). At previous research, electrolysis process used to create clean gas (H2) from water. In this research, a new method is developed by using sea water and electrical current to decrease gas emission from coal combustion. Electric current categorized as direct current (DC) and electrode made from stainless steel. Electrolysis device consists of variables that allow to be changed during research to observe variable gave most influence in reducing gas emission from coal combustion. Variables consist of electrode length (4 cm and 5.5 cm), volume of electrolyte (15 litres and 25 litres) and direct current electric voltage (6 V and 9 V). From this experiment research, electrolysis process by using sea % electric voltage higher than reduce NO emission. The most important variable experiment in reducing gas emission is electric voltage and electrode length.
