Abstract

Studies of energy loss ΔE( θ) as a function of the emergence angle θ enable one to isolate phenomena due only to elastic collisions. Experimental results for ΔE( θ) obtained for neon (40–120 keV) and argon (40–240 keV) on carbon foils (4–15 μg/cm 2) are presented. Two expressions are obtained relating angle, thickness, and energy variables. A model is developed to give a coherent explanation of the results.
