Abstract

Cross sections for all transfer channels, as well as inelastic and elastic scattering have been measured near the Coulomb barrier for 18O+ 118Sn and well above the barrier r 16O+ 48Ca. The total direct cross sections are decomposed into partial wave contributions, the largest of which are found to be of the same order of magnitude as elastic scattering. The implications of these results for the mechanism of heavy-ion direct reactions is discussed.
