Abstract
To study the formation of colorectal tissue [colonization] of the ileum in cases undergoing total colectomy and ileostomy, a comparative study was performed on the type of stoma formed, defecation conditions including number of evacuations of pouch contents and fecal water content, changes in the intestinal microflora, and formation of colorectal type tissue in the ileal tissue. The results showed that better defecation was maintained when the formation of colorectal tissue was observed. In an examination of the intestinal bacterial flora, both facultative and obligate anaerobes were detected, and the bacterial composition tended to be almost the same as that of the large bowel. The improvement observed in the defecation condition in cases with formation of colorectal tissue suggested that the formation occurred in about 3 months to 2 years postoperatively. The factors which promote the formation of colorectal tissue are still unclear, and it is hoped that this phenomenon will be clarified by future studies.
