Abstract

Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS) have been carried out at low temperature on Bi 2Sr 2CaCu 2O 8+d (Bi2212) single crystals cleaved in situ at 4.2 along the a−b plane and energy gap values corresponding to 2Δ k BTc ≈ 6.7 have been measured. For these measurements, a simple “in-situ” cleavage system has been added to a home made cryogenic STM. It was possible to carry out STM and STS measurements with a spatial resolution up to atomic scale. Local semiconducting tunneling spectra obtained over the atomically resolved BiO layer are also presented.
