Abstract
An effective total macroscopic (ETM) cross section was proposed as a useful parameter to describe a transmission character of various materials for a neutron beam having a continuum energy spectrum. The ETM cross sections of several materials, determined as a function of effective energies, were measured using a beam quality indicator. Appreciable discrepancies of ETM cross sections were observed in comparison with total macroscopic cross sections measured by a time-of-flight technique. The reliability of ETM cross sections of Ti and Pb are reevaluated considering effects of scattering and gamma ray components.
