Abstract

The journal Autism recently published a study about the quality of training that psychiatric program residents receive in autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability, as measured by lectures and patient contact. Psychiatrists are one of the care professionals with whom students with autism and ID frequently interact. However, the study concludes that there is a shortage of psychiatrists to treat such conditions — and a lack of adequate training/education on these conditions in many psychiatric residency programs.
