Abstract

Power conversion using electrical machines is always accompanied by power losses (active and reactive) and implicitly by losses of electricity in all the elements of that given electrical network topology. The level of energy losses in the electrical machines operating as motors oscillates in the range between 5 25% of the active energy supplied, depending on the structure of the electrical network, the operating conditions of the motor, its parameters etc. Most of that energy is lost as heat, but there are magnetization losses too. Starting with a new computational method for active power assessment and finishing with measurements on the real 75 kW asynchronous motor powering a mixing unit, this paper presents a simple algorithm which could easily be applied for each electrical machine.
