Abstract

The effects of the fixed carding flatson the qualities of card slivers, rovings and yarns were examined when the fixed carding flats were mounted on either side of the taker-in or the doffer, or on both sides of a flat card. Experiments were carried out with changing the settings between those fixed carding flats and the cylinder. From the results of the experiments the followings are concluded. (1) It is quite advantageous that the fibre orientation in the carded sliver is improved by mounting the fixed carding flats on both sides of the taker-in and the doffer. The fibre orientation in the trailing direction of the sliver is improved most excellently in particular. If the fixed carding flats are mounted only on one side, the effect of the carding flats on the doffer side is greater than that on the taker-in side. (2) It is not so evident to reduce the number of neps in the card sliver by mounting the fixed carding flats on both sides. But it becomes clear that the fixed carding flat on both sides are effective for reducing the number of neps in the roving and spinning processes. (3) The application of fixed carding flats on the taker-in side tends to increase the fibre breakage and the short fibre contents in the carded sliver and to decrease the average length of fibre, but those influences on the single yarn strength are not so significant. (4) As for U%, the variations of U% in the sliver, the roving and the yarn have no relation to the application of the fixed carding flats mounted on the taker-in side.Contrary to this, U% of the sliver, the roving and the yarn are improved by mounting the fixed carding flats on the doffer side. (5) The change in the numbers of thick places shows the same tendency as those of thin places. When the fixed carding flats are mounted on both sides of the taker-in and the doffer, the numbers of thick and thin places are minimum. It must be noted that the numbers of thick and thin places are more than those without the fixed carding flat if the fixed carding flats on the taker-in side are mounted under unsuitable setting conditions.
