Abstract

The purple compound C 13H 10N 4S produced by the oxidation of dithizone has been shown to be a novel bicyclic compound of structure 3-phenylazobenzo-1,3,4 (4H)-thiadiazole. The absorption spectrum of its green conjugate acid and blue anion and the infrared spectrum of the parent compound and its deuteration product are reported. The association through hydrogen-bonding indicated in the solid by X-ray crystallography has been confirmed by infrared measurements of solutions in carbon tetrachloride.
