Abstract

This article will discuss accident statistics reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and released in July. There has been substantial progress in reducing motor vehicle accidents and fatalities in the United States and recent research has found that additional deaths and injuries can be prevented by lowering speed limits and banning drivers from engaging in potentially fatal distractions, such as dialing or text messaging on cellular phones. In addition to the curtailment of impaired driving, increased seat belt use, improved roadways, and safety related vehicle features are also factors that can contribute to the reductions in motor vehicle accidents.
