Abstract

Summary In castor beans maximum activities of tyrosine ammonia lyase (TAL) and phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) in the endosperm were found at day 4 of germination. Wounding caused a strong increase in PAL activity but did not affect TAL. Treatment of the seedlings with MnCl 2 drastically enhanced PAL activity, but only a slight increase of TAL was observed. DEAE cellulose chromatography resulted in only one peak of TAL activity, whereas 2 peaks were found for PAL.
