Abstract

Ferric tungstate sols were prepared by the dialysis of the reaction products obtained after mixing varying amounts of 0.1 M sodium tungstate and 1.0 M ferric chloride. The sols on further dialysis gave gels. The times of setting of the gels were found to be dependent on the period of dialysis as well as on the ratio Wo4−/Fe+++. The variations in viscosity and conductivity were determined. It was found that the changes in viscosity were more pronounced than the conductance at the sol-gel transformation stage. The plots of the log time of setting against period of dialysis and the plots of log relative variations in viscosity and conductivity gave curves which in the major part were linear pointing towards the thixotropic nature of these gels. The variations in pH under similar condition were found to be small.
