Abstract

A new technique to obtain optimum tooth surface modification (crowning) for worm gears with addendum modification is proposed. This technique that is called no-addendum-modification treatment (NAMT) can realize worm gears that produce accurate engagement with no transmission error and no interference even if the addendum modification is very large. The technique is applied to the worm gears with a convex worm and a negative addendum modification and those with a concave worm and a positive addendum modification. Consequently, it is shown by using contour line diagrams that ideal modified tooth surfaces with no transmission error and no interference are obtained.
